Back to work - Tuesday, March 30, 2010

I am slowly adjusting to a new schedule now as I begin working again.  I just realize how little sleep both of us get and we don't have a child at home keeping us up.  There is comfort in knowing that Baby GL is getting the best care available for him right now.  Unfortunately, we miss him so much that we don't always get the rest we need thinking about him.

Today was another good day.  Baby GL is breathing well and slowly being taken off his hydrocortisone that was being used for inflammation in his lungs.  His feedings have begun again which always makes us feel better.  Really at this point he should be getting more milk than he has, but his body hasn't accepted the milk as well as we hoped.  Now that he is more mature we are hoping that he will start digesting and getting his bowel moving that way it needs to.  His liver is still a concern at this point.  We are just hoping that with the feedings the liver will heal on it's own with waste being moved out of his body.

I was able to kangaroo for a little while today.  I didn't go as long as I had hoped, but it is always wonderful to hold Baby GL.  The breathing tube was awkward today making it a little uncomfortable for both of us. Still through it all he did great.

Baby GL continues to grow which really pleases us.  As of Sunday he was about 530 grams, then I think he bumped up to 550 grams yesterday.  As of today he was weighing 620 grams.  I may be getting the actually days wrong as to when he was weighed, but the doctor did say he gainied 2.5 ounces since yesterday.  At 620 grams Baby GL is just shy of 1lb 6oz.  There may still be a little fluid retention but he is still gaining good weight regardless of the extra fluids.  When we look at his small accomplishments at only 3 weeks it's just amazing.  Even yesterday we smiled at the amount he moved his tongue.  The nurses have even given him a small pacifier which I'm not sure how they get it around the tubes.  The newest thing now is his small sounds.  He is developing his vocal cords more now and he does get a couple squeaks.  What I heard more of today was the squeaks from his breathing tube.  He is getting bigger and the tube may have a little leak from his growth which causes the little squeaks.  Soon I will be hoping for little squeaks when he begins to wail in excitement.
