Liver condition - Saturday, April 10, 2010

It's been a good week.  Officially, Baby GL is now 5 weeks old.  His most recent weight is 1 lb 13 oz.  However, the weight is not accurate because Baby GL is retaining some fluid.  Diaper changings have been great.  Baby GL has had normal bowel movements without the assistance of glycerin.  He is on full feedings now, which helps fill the diapers.  Full feedings means that he is up to 15cc's of milk every 3 hours and completely off the TPN, total parental nutrition, which were the IV fluids feeding him before he was on milk. We actually got to wheel the IV machine away, no meds and no TPN.  I hope we can stay that way.

There hasn't been much activity throughout the week, not even kangaroo sessions because of my schedule.  We did finally get results of Baby GL's liver tests.  We were hoping for nothing to come about from the testing.  What was found was that Baby GL has Alpha-1 Antitrypsin (A1AT).  This is a hereditary disorder that may predispose Baby GL to illness, most commonly emphysema.  It's not something that would happen until later in life if it even does happen. The only thing that we need to do is keep him from smoking or being around second hand smoke because that could make him further at risk for emphysema.  Really, we could have gotten much worse news. With this condition he has no restrictions aside from the smoking.  Which we would have discouraged him from smoking anyway.

Today was a very good day.  I gave Baby GL a sponge bath this morning.  He really enjoys it up until we get to his legs.  At that point he begins to cry and pulls his legs away.  He is the typical little boy. In the afternoon we needed to change his isolette. Since my husband hasn't held Baby GL yet I wanted to give him a chance today.   He still wasn't ready to kangaroo him but he was comfortable swaddling him.  It was sweet to finally see father and son together.  Baby GL enjoyed his time with Daddy.  Tomorrow will be my chance again to hold Baby GL.  It's been a long week not being able to snuggle him.
