No more glycerin - Tuesday, April 6, 2010

It's a great feeling when we can see progress.  Baby GL is now 11 3/4 inches which is a growth of 1 1/2 inches from when he was born.  His weight is 685 grams, 1lb 8oz.  We can really see his growth.  We are finally at a point where his is getting fed, filling his diaper, and growing. It's really all that we could have asked for from such a little baby.  He will continue to amaze us throughout this journey.

So yesterday on his one month birthday we had great diaper news. The best came today when I heard he had three more dirty diapers, all without the help of glycerin.  Up until now Baby GL was getting glycerin to help him with his bowel movements.  Now that we got a good start yesterday he's been able to hold his own.  His breathing is still good. He is still being slowly taken off the steroids for his lungs.  That is the only med he's on.  He did get a new breathing tube yesterday due to the fact he pulled the other one out.  Naughty boy.  The good thing that came out of that was that the nurse practitioner decided he needed a bath.  So tonight began a bathing schedule.  Every Tuesday and Saturday Baby GL will get his baths.  We gave him his first bath tonight.  With his breathing tube he is only able to get a sponge bath. He really enjoyed it.  He was very soothed by having his hair and head washed.  Once we moved down the body he wasn't as pleased.  I was, though.  It was so great to really feel and touch him.  Even when we kangaroo Baby GL is under blankets so I don't get to really hold him. When I gave him a bath I played with is feet and toes and scrubbed behind his ears.  Such small parts and they will only be that size one time so I take it all in and enjoy the moment.

Our friend was able to be there to be witness to Baby GL's bath and another dirty diaper.  He really gave her a show with his facial expressions and movements.  He was anywhere from silent screams to yawns of comfort.  At the end of our bath I combed Baby GL's peach fuzz hair.  It really fuzzed up after a shampooing.  He really enjoyed the combing.  I think it was a relaxing sensation on his scalp.

Following Baby GL's bath was his dinner.  He is now up to 8cc every 3 hours.  His feedings are going up now that he is digesting his milk so well.  I think at this point we are hoping to continue increasing his feedings so he keeps growing and we hope that he will get closer to being taken off the breathing tube.  One day at time, one breath at time.
