New Room - Tuesday, August 3, 2010

Baby GL has done really well this last week.  As expected he did have to go back onto high flow, 4 liters last Monday.  Slowly through the week, though, he came all the was down to 1 liter on a regular, which is where he's at now.

He got to move rooms last week.  There was a sick baby coming in so he was moved to the back corner of the unit into a room with 4 walls, a door and a window.  It's been very nice and quiet for us when we go to see him.

His weight is still going up.  Now he's 6lbs 6oz, 2890 grams, and he's 43 cms, just shy of 17 inches.  He's changing so much.  Even his hair is getting longer now. The front is getting darker and longer than the back.  It's really so wonderful to see.

We've continued to nurse through the week, which has gone really well.  Unfortunately, the bottle feedings haven't gone as well. Yesterday, both speech and the ENT doctor did a swallow study with a camera to see what's happening when Baby GL eats.  What they found was that his throat is still very small and there is some loose tissue, to my understanding, that is causing some problems when he swallows and tries to breath.  The end result is that he panics a little.  The hope is to see that change as he grows bigger.  He will be having a g-tube put in place for his feedings, directly into his stomach.  At the time that he has his hernia surgery that will be doing that.  The ENT will come back to take another look at his throat when he's under anesthesia.

So now we wait.  We hope the surgery will come next week, but it's not up to us.  We will just continue plugging along until it's time.
