100 days - Sunday, June 13, 2010

100 days old.  We can't believe we are at 100 days already.  This journey with Baby GL has been an amazing one.  He's over 4lbs 9oz now.  He just continues to grow.
This last week has been a preparation week.  The plan on the table is to get Baby GL to Children's Hospital for his hernia surgery and throat testing.  The doctors need to determine why he chokes up on his milk when we try bottle feeds.  He will probably go home on a g-tube into his stomach for his feedings but that won't be determined until after testing.

Mid way through the week the doctor had a blood gas, test CO2 levels, done on Baby GL.  It wasn't great.  His diagnosis was to put Baby GL back on a CPAP to help the levels come down.  Well, Baby GL is now a full-term baby and he knows what he likes and doesn't like. Apparently, the CPAP is on the dislike list.  He fought it all along the way.  When we went in the nurses were able to put the cannula on him so we could hold him.  He was very peaceful then.  He really enjoys being snuggles and having his pacifier.  The thing about the CPAP is that it gives more pressure to help regulate the CO2 levels.  With the CO2 level escalating it hinders the amount of oxygen he's able to get.

Today was a little of the last straw for him.  The days with this CPAP has show a very irritable Baby GL.  Even rocking him and having him listen to my voice that I recorded for him didn't calm him this morning. We got the call that he needed to be re-intubated.  It feels like a huge jump backwards.  However, he was going to be intubated for his surgery anyway.  It would be helpful to have the tube out for the throat tests, so that may be an issue.  It's difficult to see him back to this step, but if it's what he needs then we have to accept it.  He actually seemed just fine and less irritable compared to the CPAP.  We made the request to keep him intubated now until after his surgery.

Baby GL has had a number of tests done to determine why he was so irritable the last few days.  Everything has come back pretty normal. He is very congested and has a runny nose so he may just have a cold. The only test we're waiting on is his urine test to see if it would be a urinary tract infection.

The plan still is to get him to Children's Hospital.  We are just waiting for a space to open.  We think it will be tomorrow or Tuesday.  The one thing I hear about Children's is that they like to be very prompt with things because they do not have the space to keep babies around for an extended period.  Hopefully, that will mean he'll come home soon.
