First time Grandma holds Baby GL - Monday, May 24, 2010

Baby GL is now 3lbs 10oz, 1649 grams and 14.5 inches long.  He is surely growing.  Some of the weight is fluid, though.  He was taken off his diuretic on Friday because they are trying to regulate his sodium levels. The thought is to put him back on the diuretic.

He had a lot of visitors this weekend.  Our friend came on Friday to visit Baby GL and she was able to snuggle him a bit.   He enjoys that time being held so much now.  Even the nurses get in the action and take him out for play dates.  My mother and sister came Saturday.  It was the first time Grandma got to hold her grandson.  It was very heartwarming to see.  Baby GL is only 3lbs for so long so I wanted everyone to appreciate how small these miracle babies are.  Auntie came also and gave Baby GL a little neck massage in hopes to help his reflux. He tends to choke up a lot which makes him very uncomfortable so hopefully as he grows that we subside.

We had a meeting with the doctor yesterday to see where things are progressing and their plan of action.  Baby GL is planning to have surgery done for his hernia, but they won't do that until he's 2 kilos. That's not too far away at the rate he's been growing.  He did get an adjustment to his caloric intake.  His milk gets fortified with extra protein and vitamins to fatten him up.  The nurse gave me an idea of how many calories he's taken in by comparing it to adult weight and consumption. For the average adult to eat the calories to weight ratio he's on we would being on a 9600 calorie diet.  He must be training for the Olympics.

Many friends and family are asking when Baby GL may come home. Well, typically the doctors go by his due date, June 11, for an idea. We are waiting on his weight in hopes it will regulate a lot of the issues happening with him.  One big one is his breathing.  He can go home on oxygen but he needs to be on a regular cannula not the high flow. Also, his bottle feeds are a bit of an issue.  He's not great at it.  He had a tube for breathing for so long that it will take time for everything to be normal with his feeding and vocals.  He may come home with a g-tube for his feedings if he's not able to get his whole feeding down by bottle. He's up to 28cc's of milk every 3 hours so he's got some catching up to do with OT and the bottle.

Yesterday was bath day and Baby GL did manage to show us how much he's grown.  It was the least pleased he's been with a bath, but I did wake him from a good nap.  He let us know how unhappy he was with some of the loudest cries we've heard from him.  I guess its not nice to cheer and be happy when your baby is screaming but for us it's a huge milestone.  Towards the end he was very cozy, which is the usual outcome of a good bath.

We are so pleased with Baby GL's progress.  It's difficult even more now to leave him behind while we go home.  Hopefully the next few weeks will move fast.  This Thursday is another eye exam so we are hoping it's another good one.  We still have the worry he'll need laser surgery, but I know it's a pretty common procedure that shouldn't bother him too much if it needs to happen.
