A kilo - Saturday, April 24, 2010

I know that everyone has been waiting for an update.  In reality there hasn't been much in changes this week.  Baby GL made it to a kilo this week.  He is 1055 grams, 2lbs 5oz.  He is probably bigger today.  He went up on his feedings to 13cc's every 2 hours.  Still, he gets added vitamins and calories like iron.  As of today he has some protein added to his feedings.  Also, he was getting more hydrocortizone steroids for his lungs in anticipation for extubation, removing the breathing tube.

We've enjoyed some wonderful time with Baby GL.  Tuesday I sat with him for over an hour just holding his pacifier in with my thumb and cupping his body with my hand.  He slept with his hand on my thumb.  It was so pleasant I could've stayed there all night and slept with him.  The nurse left the top open on his isolette so I could really get close to him.  It was my time to really bong with him.  He's gotten tolerant of hand holding now.  Before he wasn't as thrilled with us touching his hand.  Now he will squeeze your finger.  I like to test his reflexes.  Stroking the back of his hand makes it open and a finger to the palm make it close.  So so cute.

Friday, April 23rd, early morning, finally Baby GL was extubated.  The tube came out and the CPAP went on.  He still has the breathing assistence but now he's more comfortable without the tube.  He does still keep the feeding tube but it's not as large as the breathing tube was.  Baby GL seems much happier now, but it does take some adjusting.  He's a little touchy, but I think once he's gotten used to the new CPAP he will be calmer.  He has figured out if he moves his head enough the CPAP will come off so the nurses keep him snuggled tightly to keep his head from moving too much.  With his mouth free now he really gets goes to town on his pacifier.

This morning my sister and I went to walk in the March of Dimes, March for Babies.  In the rain and cold we walked the full 3 miles.  It was a great time to overhear stories of other preemies.  It's a wonderful cause that will help raise money for research for these babies.  There are some new babies in the NICU now that are smaller than Baby GL.  He's not the smallest anymore.  The smallest one there now is 1lb 4oz.  When we look at that baby and compare her size to Baby GL now it's hard to imagine he was actually smaller than that not long ago.
