New Doctor - Sunday, July 18, 2010

With a new doctor comes new perspective.  Last week Baby GL was up to 48 ccs of milk for his feeding every 3 hours.  The decision was made do take him back down to 43 ccs to reduce the amount of fluids he gets.  It's been a cycle of more milk, followed by continuous diuretic which then causes more sodium chloride.  To help resolve the extra fluids he is just getting less.  The goal is to come off the diuretic.
Even with lower amounts of milk he still continues to gain weight. He bounced back and forth on his weight.  Thursday was 2630 grams, Friday 2530 grams, now Saturday 2690 grams, which is 5 lbs 15oz.  Hard to believe he's almost 6lbs.  His height now is 16 3/4 inches.  Now quite a quick in growing taller as he is gaining weight.

Up until this weekend Baby GL has been alternating his CPAP with a high flow cannula. Each day he would go longer.  He had a very good blood gas, which means his CO2 levels are slowly coming down.  He was up to 12 hours on the cannula on Friday.  Doctors said as long as he did well he'd stay on the cannula.  Here it is Sunday and so far so good. He'll have another blood gas on Monday that will hopefully show he's still moving in the right direction.

At this point we cannot make a plan for when he'll come home.  We are trying to accomplish other things to get him closer to coming home.  I spoke with Speech about his bottle feeds.  It seems to make sense to me to have Baby GL on a schedule.  His feedings have been a little sporadic.  I want him to be awake and alert and expecting his bottle.  The schedule is to have a bottle with Speech during the week at 12pm.  Hopefully he'll realize the schedule and stay away and ready.  On the weekends I make sure to be there at noon to hold him during his feeding.  My own goals would be to nurse him someday.

My visits have been getting longer and harder.  Now that Baby GL is getting older we both realize how difficult it is to leave him.  Each time we go he's growing.  Now when I go I lay him tummy down on me.  He really sees to enjoy his tummy time.  It's amazing how strong he's getting.  I almost think he wants to pull up to a crawl. Maybe not yet but he lifts his head so beautifully.

Baby GL thrives on looking around and being social.  The nurses put him in his swing sometimes and he just loves it.  I know he can't focus yet on objects but he locks his sights on something and just studies it.  Lately, too, he's been more awake and alert so he's really been interested in the world.  Hopefully this next week will show even more progress and move us closer to him coming home.
