4 months old - Monday, July 5, 2010

Four months old already!  We can hardly believe that Baby GL is already four months old.  It seems the time is moving so quickly, but yet too slowly since he's not home yet.  At four months Baby GL is 5lbs 5oz, 2435 grams, and 16 1/8 inches, 41 cm, long.

Baby GL's main goal now is to strengthen his lungs.  He's been on a CPAP for oxygen with a slow integration of the high flow cannula. Baby GL's CO2 levels elevate on the high flow cannula so he can't be on it full-time until he can take deeper breaths to regulate his CO2.

He began with one a hour on the high low cannula and slowly, each day, progressed.  He was on for four hours today.  Because he's been able to be on high flow I asked if we could progress towards his swallow test which would tells us why he was having problems with the bottle.  Speech began bottle feeds last week to see how he did. We think that age and size have been in his favor because he has been doing great with the bottle.  His first time he took 8 ccs of milk. However, he was so excited he forgot to take breaths.  The next day he took 6 ccs and remembered to breath.  He made it to 12 ccs by Friday and again remembered to breath.  He just got tired by 12 ccs, but it's wonderful progress.

Baby GL's weight I'm sure has been a concern for the doctors.  He's up to 45 ccs of milk which seems to be helping him gain weight.  He was down to 5lbs 0ozs only a few days ago.  Even at 5lbs Baby GL looks so healthy.  He's the typical chubby little infant. He's almost grown out of his first clothing. We anxiously await him coming home.  His room is nearly ready and his rocking chair is next to our bed waiting to rock him to sleep.
