Re-intubated - Wednesday, May 12, 2010

We are moving along a very loopy coaster ride.  We had a tough week last week with Baby GL's breathing.  The weekend showed promise but he was up on his oxygen pressure.  By Monday he was still showing promise in his breathing, however, he still needed some reminders to breath.

The doctor called me with some concerns yesterday with his crying.  At this point he's been off the ventilator long enough that when he cries we should be hearing him.  He still cries a very hoarse screech which concerns them.  He diagnosis is to see an ear, nose and throat doctor to make sure his vocal cords are vibrating as they are supposed to. She wanted to wait until after his eye exam on Thursday to call the ENT doctor.  If his eyes have changed he may need to transfer to Children's Hospital for laser surgery where he would then be seen by an ENT. His eyes hadn't changed the last eye exam he had so I have faith his eyes will be fine this time around.  I am worried about his vocals, though.

Last night I received a good phone call after my visit with Baby GL. The nurse weighed him and thought it was exciting enough that the news needed to be shared.  Baby GL is now 3lbs!  I went to bed with a very large smile and comfort knowing he was getting bigger.
Early this morning, 12:30am, we were back on the coaster going down. Baby GL has to be re-intubated.  He had stopped breathing and could not get enough breath from the high flow cannula that it was the only thing they could do.  They suspect he may have a virus of some sort so a treatment of antibiotics were started.  The NP drew some cultures to see what virus they may be dealing with.

I called for an update early this morning and didn't get the news I'd hoped for.  The NP suspects pneumonia.  His lungs look a little questionable at this point but they won't know for sure until the cultures come back with results.  The ventilator is doing all of his breathing for him.  He's wiped out and needs the rest.  We hope that with some rest he can recover and begin breathing on his own and working out whatever virus he has. We are thankful for his weight gain, but concerned that 3lbs may not be enough.

Baby GL received his 2 month immunizations Monday and Tuesday so I'm hoping that he's just having a temporary reaction to the shots.  I think I am alone in my assumptions, though.  He doesn't have a fever yet which makes them believe he's not reacting to the shots.
