6 lbs - Sunday, July 25, 2010

Great week for Baby GL.  Slowly, Baby GL has come down on his oxygen needs.  Wednesday he came down to the lowest oxygen ever, 2 liters on regular flow cannula.  Regular flow is less pressure so Baby GL has to work to breath more on his own.  It's wonderful because the regular flow tubing is much lighter than high flow so it's easier to hold him and rock him.  His blood gases are still being measured for his CO2 levels and he's been successful at keeping them in normal levels.  There'll be another blood gas tomorrow so hopefully he'll continue to take those levels down.

Unfortunately, we have gone backwards on his bottle feeding.  He is still having drops in his heart rate when he tries a bottle.  So now we just work on drops of milk on his pacifier.  Today we were able to try nursing.  We tried during two feedings today.  The idea was to get him interested so he still received milk through his feeding tube.  His second shot was successful.  It's not an easy task to get preemies to nurse so I was thrilled that he wanted to.

Another wonderful accomplishment is that Baby GL is now 6lbs, 2730 grams.  Such a big boy now.  He looks so healthy and acts like such a big boy.  We spend tummy time together and he is so great at holding his head and just looking everything up and down.  We both are just going crazy not having him home yet.  He really reacts to us coming around.  Looking at us, stops crying when we pick him up, refuses to be in his swing when I get there.  It's an incredible feeling that he knows when we're there.
