Impatient - Thursday, March 25, 2010

We are still dealing with an anxious child.  Baby GL just isn't happy being fussed with.  The good news is that he enjoys the good touch. The nurse last night suggested I stick my head in his condo.  She opened the side of the condo and had me stick my head in.  It seemed a bit awkward but it was nice to be close to him.  My neck got sore after awhile, but Baby GL really enjoyed it.  His numbers stayed stable and no alarms were going off.

He doesn't deal with much nowadays.  At almost 3 weeks old he is getting impatient with the ventilator.  Unfortunately, he is too small to move to a nose ventilator and still not stable enough in his breathing.  I think when we get to be able to change the ventilator he will be happier.  Early this morning he showed us once again how unhappy he is.  At least there are meds and procedures that stabilize him.  He is starting a steroid med now for his lungs.  We hope it will help prevent what has been happening.

Aside from all the difficult things happening, Baby GL is getting bigger. His weight was 660 grams the other day but it's not very accurate due to a lot of fluid retention this week.  He's quickly passing the fluid with some help of a diuretic.  He was getting milk the last couple days, but now the feedings have stopped.  We are just making sure the milk is properly digesting.  It's typical to start and stop the feedings in the beginning as we get his gut adjusted to digesting.  I always hope to stay on the feedings to keep the weight gain going.
