The scare - Tuesday March 16, 2010

It's been a few days since I updated.  We have been exhausted from the weekend and just trying to catch up.

Well, we had a long weekend in the hospital.  Baby GL made it through his first 7 days beautifully and when you think you are out of the woods you get a scare.  Saturday evening was terrible.  Baby GL was dropping his saturation levels and his heart rate dramatically.  He dropped to a rate that needed hands-on assistance, but it wasn't enough.  It felt like hours trying to get him stable. At one point we were asked if we wanted the team to continue to work on him or stop and just hold him to make him comfortable.  I was not able to answer, I was torn with not wanting to lose my baby and still wanting him to be comfortable.  My husband made the decision to keep working on him.  I am so thankful he did.  After many failing attempts to get him stabilized Baby GL was given epinephrine to get his heart going.  His heart hadn't stopped but nothing else was working. Baby GL managed to become stabilized, finally.

We were told to stay in the hopsital in a room close by just in case. One of the worst things a parent could ever hear is to be prepared for if he doesn't make it and that your child is trying to leave us.  I pray that it is the worst day we ever see.  Because of the issues happening we stayed in the hospital to be close.  It's very difficult to leave your child when he's so fragile.

He has remained stable now since late Saturday night and things are looking good again.  He is slowly working out his infection, breathing is still good and his heart is strong.  He's giving the nurses the run around again by pulling off his wires that monitor him. The nurses scold him multiple times throughout the day for being too wiggly.

The most entertaining things to me are probably things that would make the average mom nuts.  When they did an x-ray the nurses had to remove his diaper.  The moment that happened he showed how much of a little boy he his.  A long healthy stream, about 3-4 inches long of urine shot onto his clean sheets.  I think he got the nurse, too. That may not seem very long, 3-4 inches, but the boy is only 10 1/4 inches long.  So for him that was really good.  The is one area he has never had problems with.

Our other accomplishment happened yesterday when he finally opened his right eye.  He was trying for so long to get that eye opened.  Now he likes to peek.  He opens his eyes quick then closes them as if he doesn't want you to know he's looking.  He also tries to put his fingers in his mouth. Today he actually got his thumb in there for a moment. He makes us so proud and you can't help but smile and laugh around him.  After a whole weekend of tears he makes up for it quickly.
