Extubated - Tuesday, June 22, 2010

Yesterday, once again, Baby GL was extubated.  He was a little on edge throughout the rest of the day which was expected.  By today he was doing great.  He was put back on a high flow cannula yesterday but his co2 levels were too high.  To bring the levels down he has to be put on CPAP.  Surprisingly, he's had a great day on CPAP.  The CPAP he's on is alternating between a mask and nose prongs.  The mask just goes around his nose to give his nostrils a break from the prongs.  The prongs give more direct pressure so he needs some time on them.
His weight, as I suspected, dropped 120 grams.  He's now 5lbs 8oz.  The edema is working itself out with the massages and diuretic so he's nearly perfect.  He's being visited by PT now to work with him.  He seems to like the therapy.

His plan now is to rest and recover.  Tomorrow is another routine eye exam.  That will exhaust Baby GL for most of the day.  As for long term, the plan is to work on his lungs and breathing and when he's bigger he'll get his hernia surgery.  Right now it's hard to know when we'll have Baby GL home.
