First time Grandpa holds Baby GL - Tuesday, June 8, 2010

Baby GL was three months old on Saturday, June 5th.  We celebrated his wonderful new accomplishments of getting an open crib and reaching 4lbs.  He's really come a long way.  We get to hold him whenever we are there now.  It's so much easier now to get him in and out of his crib.  I've become very comfortable with his monitoring equipment, too.  The nurses really have us get involved now.  Even tonight the nurse had me give Baby GL his meds during his feeding.  He's still getting a diuretic, triglycerides for extra calories, and a vitamin supplement.

A couple other new accomplishments happened this week.  Grandpa finally held Baby GL on Sunday.  It was very brief, but still surprising.  When it comes to dirty diaper duty I know he'll be no where to be found so I will take the brief moments of holding Baby GL.  Today Baby GL's Great Aunt and Great Uncle came to visit. For the first time Baby GL was able to be hooked up to an oxygen tank and taken to the window to have visitors.

His oxygen levels are slowly being lowered.  He was at 3.5L of oxygen pressure earlier last week and now he's down to 2L.  It's still a high flow setting but hopefully by Monday he'll be down to a regular glow cannula.

His latest feedings are up to 37cc's.  With that bump up in the amount of milk he's getting he gained 63 grams today, which is over 2oz.  He's now 2011 grams, 4lbs 6oz, over 2 kilos.  Baby GL is finally at a good weight for surgery.  The doctor's plan is to get Baby GL to Children's Hospital by next Friday, June 18th.  He will be speaking to the surgeon this week to make the final decision.  Once Baby GL gets to Children's he will most likely stay there until being discharged to come home.

At this point we are getting very excited and nervous for him to come home. We know there will be a lot involved with bringing him home.  It will be so wonderful to see him and take care of him since we've missed out on a lot of it thus far.
