At the new hospital - Saturday, June 19, 2010

It was a long week for Baby GL.  On Tuesday he was transferred to Children's Hospital.  He was having a rough couple days.  The nurses had to stay bedside to keep an eye on him.  There still isn't a good reason for why Baby GL needed to be intubated once again.  He may have had a cold because he did have a stuffy nose which probably made breathing more difficult.

The process at Children's is to have new children in isolation until blood tests confirm they are clear of infection.  We had to wear gloves and gowns to visit him.  Since his first test came back positive it was another couple days in gloves and gowns. Today the results came back confirming the first culture was a false positive so he is clear of infection and he's been taken off the antibiotics he was given as a precaution.

The one thing that has been a little worrisome is that Baby GL has a lot of edema.  The swelling is all around his neck, eyes and down his body. He was given a strong diuretic while he was on the iv's.  Now he's back to milk feeds so he's being given the normal diuretic he's been on the past couple of months.  PT has been giving Baby GL a massage to work through the edema.  Today the nurse told me she had to change his sheets because he wet them all the way through.  Now that's the Baby GL I remember.  The diuretics and massage must have kicked in. The nurse even backed up his diaper with a second diaper under him.

With his edema Baby GL is only on 35cc's of milk.  They want to lower some of the fluids to get him back to normal.  The edema has caused such a problem even his weight is skewed.  According to the nurse he weighed 5lbs 4oz.  It seems unrealistic because I'm pretty sure he was 4lbs 11oz a week ago Saturday.  I'm not ready for him to be that big. His length is only 15 3/4 inches.  Hopefully as his edema settles and he gets extubated we'll get an accurate weight.

Some of the goals of our trip to Children's has changed. Originally we had planned for Baby GL to have his hernia surgery.  After being evaluated the thoughts now are to wait for the surgery until he's bigger.  His lungs and swallowing are finding to be more important at this point.  If the surgeon decides to postpone the surgery Baby GL will be extubated, most likely, by Tuesday.  Things still could change.

Our goal right now is just to make sure Baby GL is comfortable and healthy.  He has the best care even though we miss the pleasantries of our NICU nurses.  There Baby GL would've gotten a wonderful card to celebrate 5lbs.  I'll have to try to make my own, but it looks like we passed it up already days ago.
