Transfer to new hospital - Tuesday, June 15, 2010

Baby GL is being transferred to Children's hospital this morning, around 10:45am.  It's making us a little nervous, but we have faith he'll do fine. The last couple days have been very difficult.  He's not happy on his ventilator.  He is constantly fighting the tube.  He's getting morphine to calm him but it doesn't do much.  The nurses have kept a close eye on him and stay by his bedside.  Last night a little music by his bedside seemed to calm him. He seems so vulnerable now.  He's 4lbs 11oz but not able be dressed or have any of his blankets and things with him. It's make's it hard to watch that.  He's gotten so accustomed to the "stuff" around him.

The process of getting him into the transfer gurney was long and terrible. He fought the new ventilator for transfer and he was having repeated bradycardia episodes.  It was probably almost noon before we got him to the ambulance.  The end result after they tried sedation was a paralytic.  It was something to paralyze his body temporarily so he'd stop fighting and clamping down.  The idea was to relax him and let the machines do the work for him.  That was a very scary thought to paralyze him.  It did seem to do the trick because the transfer crew reported a very smooth ride to Children's.

For the next couple days he's in isolation which I guess is typical for new babies coming into the NICU.  They want to prevent any infectious diseases coming in.  For the first time I needed to wear gloves to touch my baby. We left after a short while of visiting with him.  The staff there needed to do a number of tests to admit him.  The one thing that made me nervous was that they did change out his breathing tube to a larger one because the one he had was too small and leaking air.  I pray for no damage to his vocals and airways.

He quickly came out of his sedation which was surprising the nurse on staff.  I think they expected a calm average baby.  I've told them they need to watch out because he'll keep them on their toes.  It will take time getting used to these nurses not knowing Baby GL.  He was very well known in our NICU.  The nurses there just know his quirks.

It's unknown yet what is going to happen now.  We know that hernia surgery is on the list, a swallow test will be done, and now the doctors will need to determine why he needed to be re-intubated.  Which basically means that it needs to be determined how bad his chronic lung disease is.

Thank you to everyone giving your support.  We have another hurdle to get over but we have lots of faith and support with us.
